Liên từ tương quan
Để hiểu rõ về liên từ chúng ta sẽ bắt đầu tìm hiểu ví dụ sau đây
E.g: The form must be signed by (both / either) the department supervisor and the payroll manager.
(Mẫu đơn phải được ký bởi cả giám sát bộ phận và quản lý phòng tính lương.)
Do trong câu có and nên both sẽ là đáp án chính xác. Ta có cấu trúc both A and B nghĩa là cả A và B.
Một số cặp liên từ tương quan phổ biến:
– both A and B (cả A và B đều)
– either A or B (A hoặc B)
– not only A but (also) B (không chỉ A mà còn B)
– not A but (rather) B (không phải A mà là B)
– A and B alike (cả A và B như nhau)
– neither A nor B (cả A và B đều không)
– B as well as A (B cũng như A)
E.g: The workshop was very informative for experts and beginners alike.
(Buổi hội thảo rất hữu ích cho chuyên gia cũng như những người mới bắt đầu.)
Liên từ kết hợp
E.g: Ms. Watson began working here four years ago, (and / or / how) she has contributed substantially to the success of the company.
(Cô Watson bắt đầu làm việc ở đây 4 năm trước, và cô ấy đã cống hiến đáng kể cho thành công của công ty.)
Vì khoảng trống nằm giữa hai mệnh đề, ta có thể điền một liên từ kết hợp. Xét về nghĩa thì and sẽ là lựa chọn chính xác.
Các liên từ kết hợp:
– and (và)
– or (hoặc)
– but/yet (nhưng)
– nor (cũng không)
E.g: Ms. Vazques was not at the party, nor was she at home yesterday.
(Cô Vazques không ở bữa tiệc, cũng không ở nhà vào ngày hôm qua.)
Nor nghĩa là cũng không, câu trên đang sử dụng hình thức câu đảo ngữ.

Cấu trúc song song
E.g: We are satisfied with your service (and / so) would like to renew the contract.
(Chúng tôi hài lòng với dịch vụ của bạn và muốn gia hạn tiếp hợp đồng.)
Vì chủ ngữ của hai mệnh đề trước và sau giống nhau (we), vì vậy cấu trúc song song được sử dụng và chủ ngữ mệnh đề sau đã được lược bỏ.
Các liên từ kết hợp được sử dụng trong cấu trúc song song

– or (hoặc)
– but/yet (nhưng)
E.g: Please try to speak more slowly and (please try to speak more) clearly.
(Hãy cố gắng nói chậm hơn và (hãy cố gắng nói) rõ ràng hơn.)
